Formulas and assumptions

Gross profit = revenue − variable costs. Operating profit = gross profit − fixed operating expenses. Operating margin = operating profit ÷ revenue.

Break-even revenue = fixed operating expenses ÷ contribution margin ratio, where the ratio = (revenue − variable costs) ÷ revenue. A positive contribution margin is required; otherwise break-even revenue is not attainable in this simplified model.

The example treats entered variable costs as a constant share of revenue for break-even. It excludes taxes, financing, and any costs not entered. Inputs stay in this page's memory and reset when the page is refreshed; they are not saved to an account.
